MPP Kevin Flynn to Appeal Ontario Power Authority’s Lack of Transparency

Friday, March 19, 2010 - Oakville Ontario News

OAKVILLE – MPP Kevin Flynn expressed frustration with the Ontario Power Authority’s (OPA) response to a request for additional information on the selection process that resulted in the decision to allow TransCanada to build a natural gas power plant in Oakville.

“From the start, I have said that the decision to build a 900mw natural gas power plant less than 400 metres from the nearest homes and schools is illogical and I believe my community deserves to know why this site was chosen,” said Flynn.

To date the OPA has refused to provide answers to the people of Oakville and yet maintains that it is running a transparent process.

“If the process was truly transparent, members of the Oakville community would have been provided this important information relating to their health and safety” said Flynn. “The credibility of the OPA in Oakville continues to be at a low-point and unacceptable responses like this only exacerbate a poor situation.”

Flynn stated that this was not the response he was looking for and noted that he “will be filing an appeal with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner in the hopes they can help us obtain the information the community deserve.”

In the interest of enhanced transparency, Flynn is making the inadequate response from the OPA public.

As part of his continued opposition to the proposed TransCanada power plant, Flynn will introduce his Private Members’ Bill next week that proposes a significant setback distance for natural gas power plants that have not received all municipal, provincial or federal permits.
