Oakville, ON - Long time Oakville resident and artist Michael Young has been selected by the town to create the individual art pieces that will be presented to the Community Spirit Award winners. The art pieces will be unveiled at the awards ceremony on Wednesday, June 16.

“We wanted to create something different for our Community Spirit Award winners,” said Nina deVaal, Director of Recreation and Culture. “The program was created by the town to capture our community’s unique spirit and the sculptures truly reflect this.”

Michael Young won his first award for sculpture when he was 16, then became a Professional Engineer, but returned after 17 years to pursue his passion for art. Graduating with Honours from the Sculpture and Installation program at the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2000, he has undertaken many commissions and received numerous awards for his work.

The Community Spirit Awards recognize the contribution individuals, organizations, businesses and groups have made to the Oakville community through volunteerism. The weight of the art piece reflects the significant impact volunteers have towards making Oakville the most livable town in Canada.

Award categories include: Access Award, sponsored by MEDIchair Halton; Arts Award, sponsored by the Oakville Beaver; Environmental Award, sponsored by Tim Hortons; Group Volunteer Award, sponsored by Sun Life Financial; Heritage and History Award, sponsored by Genworth Financial Canada; Individual Volunteer Award, sponsored by Paradiso Restaurant; International Award, sponsored by EllisDon; Senior Award, sponsored by Sunrise Senior Living; and Youth Award, sponsored by RBC Royal Bank.

The nomination deadline for the 2010 Community Spirit Awards closes Friday, April 23. Get your nominations in now! Forms are available at Town Hall and at all three community centres, or can be completed online at http://www.oakville.ca/csa.htm
