Whole Foods Market Oakville is pleased to announce an ongoing partnership with Oakville Sustainable Food Partnership (OSFP), founders of the Harbourside Organic Farmers’ Market.
The partnership includes the Store hosting the Harbourside Organic Farmers’ Market from June 16 through October.
In addition, to launch the partnership, the Oakville store is donating 5% of sales on April 18 to the OSFP.
“We are thrilled to support small local organic farmers; our support of OSFP and the Harbourside Organic Farmers’ Market is a great example of that support,” says France Fournier, community relations specialist, Whole Foods Market Oakville. “We hope our customers make it a priority to not only shop on April 18, but to continue supporting the farmers’ market on Saturdays throughout the summer and into October.”
Set up every Saturday morning on the Store’s terrace at the south entrance, the Market will encourage shoppers to “buy local,” featuring only organic products from local farmers. The market will help remind shoppers of the many reasons to support local farm markets; including putting a “face” behind food and keeping people connected to the seasons, as well as the unique flavour and diversity of local crops. From an environmental perspective, minimizing handling and transportation costs gives farmers maximum return on their investment. Plus, most of the money spent on local production stays in the community, “greening up” the local economy.
Visitors to the market will have the opportunity to support small local organic farmers, partake in cooking classes, food demos and grab a bite to eat at the Whole Foods Market BBQ.
The OSFP is a nonprofit, volunteer-run environmental organization that supports ecological farming and local food in partnership. Launched in 2007, the Harbourside Organic Farmers’ Market is the only organic farmers’ market in Oakville. The market was launched to reconnect Oakville residents with sustainable and healthy foods and environmentally friendly products from farmers and processors within 100 miles.
