Sheridan College’s theatre season is in full swing. This month, there are two shows taking place: Blood Brothers and the well-known classic, Oklahoma!. Both shows run until the 25th, with some show times already sold out. As always, Sheridan’s productions are open to the public.

Michael Rubinoff, the Associate Dean of Sheridan’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts, recognizes the Oakville community’s continuous support of the performing arts at Sheridan.

“One of the most wonderful things about Theatre Sheridan, is the support we get from the Oakville community. Our subscribers are some of the most dedicated theatre-goers around. And what’s really thrilling for me, is to meet them after the show, when they say wonderful things like, ‘I’ve been coming since the beginning for 30 years’ or ‘I’ve been coming for 22 years, haven’t missed a show’,” said Rubinoff. “They’re always enthusiastic and they are so excited to see this next generation of talent.”

The current shows feature second and third year students from the Music Theatre Performance and Technical Production programs. They have had five weeks of rehearsal time and had to audition for their roles as they will have to in their careers after Sheridan.

“It is completely real world,” said Rubinoff, describing the pre-production process the students go through, auditioning and practising for their parts.

Blood Brothers is based loosely on The Corsican Brothers, a novella written by Alexandre Dumas, père in 1844. The story follows a pair of twins from Liverpool who were separated at birth but become friends anyway, not knowing of their deeper connection. The production is being directed by Terry Tweed. It takes place at Sheridan’s Studio Theatre, located in the G Wing at the Trafalgar Campus.

Oklahoma! is the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein production, based on Green Grow the Lilacs, a play written by Lynn Riggs in 1931. Oklahoma! is a love story that takes place in the early 1900s. The musical is being directed by Tim French and will take place on Sheridan’s main stage, in Macdonald-Heaslip Hall at the Trafalgar Campus.

Later in the year, the students will be performing Sweeney Todd (April 10 – 21) as well as the first pieces from The Canadian Music Theatre Project, Come From Away and Central Park Tango (April 12 – 21). The Canadian Music Theatre Project is a program set up by Sheridan to help develop new pieces of musical theatre.
