The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts in Oakville has an exciting array of events designed to appeal to tastes of every description throughout January and February; an opportunity to enjoy the world of music, dance and storytelling. Excerpts from the Oakville Centre web-site give an overview of the variety of first-class entertainment opportunities available to residents and visitors of Oakville. Here’s some highlights of upcoming big ticket events and community presentations. Be sure to visit http://www.oakvillecentre.ca/ for a complete calendar listing.

The Number 14, part of the Paradiso Dance and Drama Series, is featured on Friday January 25th at 8pm at the Oakville Centre. Sitting in a bus, the audience will be taken for a “dazzling, slap-happy” ride as six characters grow to sixty, all with masks, creating entertaining, recognizable, larger than life characters.

Peter and the Wolf will be presented January 27th at 2pm at the Figura Theatre. An award winning performance, the play is designed to appeal to youngsters, ages 6 – 10 years of age. Wood-carved puppets will tell Sergio Prokofiev’s story and its music, originally created in 1936. “…a stunningly picturesque and musical theatre play that brings young audiences into deep connection with the wonders of music.” KEVIN BRUCE, kbamonline.com (more…)

The Tempus Choral Society & Great Local Holiday Concerts to Attend

The Tempus Choral Society

The Tempus Choral Society brought the musical sounds of Christmas to life as they presented their holiday program “Welcome Yule”. According to Musical Director Brian Turnbull, “The abundance of glorious music is one of the many reasons that this time of year is so special and we hope that this concert will put you in the Christmas spirit while you help us share our unique brand of holiday cheer”.

The musical journey included time-honoured favourites and contemporary classics that the Tempus Choral Society perform with technical perfection and an overflowing love of singing. No holiday concert would be complete without the Tempus Christmas Sing-a-long, always a favourite. The concert began with “Welcome Yule” and concluded with the Grand Finale, an interesting, fun version of Jingle Bells! The Tempus choir also sang beloved sacred music, including a stirring rendition of Ave Maria with Flautist, Nicole Parant. “Music has the power to heal, bring laughter and perhaps even a tear”

The sentiments of the Tempus Choral Society are shared with many musical organizations throughout the community of Oakville. You will find the opportunity to sing well loved Christmas music in the Churches of Oakville Sunday mornings throughout December.

Flying High & Rocking Out at this Year’s Santa Claus Parade

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

“Look! Up in the sky – it’s a bird; it’s a plane! It’s a Christmas tree formation of planes!” This year’s Parade will start with a sky-high thrill! Make sure to look up jut before 9:00 am to see seven airplanes flying in a Christmas tree formation overhead. Normally based at the North Pole, Santa is sending his very own squadron of airplanes to kick-off Oakville’s 64th annual Parade. “We are very excited to have Santa’s planes flying overhead again this year,” said Pam Damoff, Santa Claus Parade Chair.  “In keeping with our Parade theme of ‘Once Upon a Christmas,’ the Parade fly-by will kick off a season of special holiday memories for parade-goers.”

No visit from Santa would be complete without marching bands playing the streets of downtown Oakville and Kerr Village on Parade Day. This year’s line-up will definitely provide entertainment for all ages and everyone will get into the Christmas spirit as they sing along to their favourite Christmas carols.

Charles Demuynck

The Oakville Chamber Orchestra kicks off their 2012-2013  concert season November 3rd and 4th. This weekend’s show, Brilliance and Light, features the internationally-known Blakemore Trio.

To help celebrate the launch of the new season, we got to know the Orchestra’s Conductor, Charles Demuynck who tells us about his favourite composers, his unlikely ipod playlist and how the Orchestra is working to target a younger demographic.

Oakville.com (OC): How long have you been with the Oakville Chamber Orchestra?

Charles Demuynck (CD): I started with OCO in the fall of 1995, but I was not there continuously, Stephane Potvin was the conductor for a time.  I calculate this is my 14th season.  I’m proud to say the group has improved substantially in every way since I arrived, and is now at the best artistic and financial level it’s ever been, thanks to the hard work of many people along the way.

(OC): How long have you been a Conductor?

(CD): 28 years.

(OC): Who is your favourite composer, why?

(CD): When I was young it was for sure Mozart, and I certainly love his music no less now, but I more frequently listen to Bach (whom I play regularly at St. Andrew’s Catholic) and Mahler (conducting his Symphony #2 with Masterworks of Oakville last year was one of the highlights of my career).  Brahms is also a favourite.
