Election Q&A with Oakville riding candidate Max Khan

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Max Khan is the Liberal candidate in the Oakville riding in the Federal Election being held on May 2, 2011.

Oakville.com: What are the platform issues that you are addressing?

Max Khan: Restoring democracy, supporting families and strengthening our economy.

Most of our new campaign volunteers say they are most concerned about the way democracy has eroded under the Harper Conservatives. They want their government to respect Parliament and its watchdogs, improve access to information, focus on building consensus, and ensure a level playing field in elections.

The other two issues deal with concerns everyday people have about making ends meet while providing a future for themselves and their families.

The Liberal Party has a comprehensive plan to strengthen families – the Family Pack – without raising the GST or taxes paid by families and small businesses. We will not raise corporate taxes but we will not allow any more cuts in the rates paid by the top 5% largest and most profitable companies in Canada. This $5-6 billion a year in income (that was not included in the Harper budget) is what we will use to fund our platform. The rest of the money we need will come from ending wasteful spending on unnecessary jets, jails, partisan ads and gifts to Tory ridings.

Election Q&A with Halton riding candidate Connie Laurin-Bowie

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Connie Laurin-Bowie is the Liberal candidate in the Halton riding in the Federal Election being held on May 2, 2011.

Oakville.com: What are the platform issues that you are addressing?

Connie Laurin-Bowie: The Liberal platform focuses on easing the financial burden on working Canadians and it seems to be resonating quite strongly with Halton residents. A consistent issue I am hearing about during this election campaign is people worried about their ability to manage their household budget in a time when the cost of living is rising. From rising gas prices to increases on utility bills, Halton residents are worried about their ability to make ends meet and are looking to their government to offer some relief.

We need a strategy to ease some of the expenses faced by families that can simultaneously strengthen our economy and act as an investment in the future of our country. Three crucial ways in which the Liberal platform addresses this is by making investments in education, health care, and childcare.

The cost of post-secondary education is one of the largest financial burdens for families and often leaves young graduates straddled with debt. As a mother of two young boys, my husband I have often worried about the rising costs of tuition and how we would send our children through University or College. A Liberal Government has committed $4,000 for every student who gets the grades to continue their education, funds that would allow more students to receive an education and drive the future of our economy while at the same time reducing costs for families and student debt.
