Giftless Birthday Parties For Kids

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Has your child been invited to a giftless birthday party?  Have you held a giftless party for your kids? Recently the momstown Oakville message board was joining in on the conversation about this new trend.  A member was thinking of going this route for her child’s upcoming birthday and was wondering how people felt about it.

For those who haven’t heard about a giftless birthday party, the idea is that invited guests are asked to make a charitable donation instead of bringing a gift.  A popular tool to use is where you can make a donation and half of the money goes to a charity of choice and the other half goes towards buying one larger gift for the birthday boy or girl.  If not using that tool, you can simply direct people to a charitable organization’s website.  Another option is to do a giftless birthday where you don’t ask for donations either but just let guests know that gifts are not necessary. Happy Family Literacy Day!

Sunday, January 27th, 2013

Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

Held annually on January 27th, this year marks the 15th anniversary of the special day. To help celebrate, families are encouraged to take “15 Minutes of Fun” to learn together. Learning can happen anywhere, anytime. Taking time every day to read or do a learning actvity with children is crucial to a child’s development. Reading and writing skills are necessary for good communication later in life and can ultimately contribute to a child’s chances for success. Even just 15 minutes a day can improve a child’s literacy skils dramatically and can help a parent sharpen their skills as well. (more…)

 Colin Brennan

Colin Brennan

Colin Brennan is a 10 year old singer from Oakville who has won both world-wide fame and the hearts of everyone for whom he performs. Colin is autistic and feels that his autism makes him “Different” – and special. He was honored to be a performing Artist at this year’s annual “Genius of Autism” event in fantastic downtown New York City in Times Square on October 22nd.

This performance was done at the end of Act One for the night. The Edison Ballroom was the beautiful Venue for this event and there were over 260 high caliber VIP’s in the audience. The other performers came from all over the Globe to showcase their talents as well, and Colin felt they were all “a super nice group of people to be with”!

According to Victor Hugo, “To witness the majestic, untainted and pure performances of this year’s 14 nominees is to see the face of God. To be a mere mortal amongst such genius is to feel humbled and unworthy, knowing you will never be an equal in their Pantheon of Genius: the evening was that emotional.”
