Canada Day in Bronte

Show your true colours in Oakville this Canada Day with a bit of red and white in the city.

Bring the kids and enjoy a full day of sun, food, fun and fireworks with events across Oakville. Don’t forget to top off the day with a stellar fireworks display organized by the Bronte BIA.

“It’s a big quality show, and we haven’t cut back at all,” said Ann Sargent, Executive Director of the Bronte BIA. “It’s Oakville’s Canada day and the town of Oakville is still our major sponsor. It’s brought to the people by the merchants of the BIA, as well as our sponsors.”

“We’re blessed with a beautiful sparkling lakeside venue in order to do all this. For us this is about pride in our community, but it gives us a chance come together and celebrate our freedoms,” she said.

“We are fortunate to live in a beautiful town. We are also fortunate to celebrate together the freedoms that have been fought for by our veterans and our troops.”

Downtown OakvilleOakville’s downtown core has been declared a “tourist destination” by the Region of Halton and Town of Oakville.

“This is fantastic news for downtown Oakville!” Says Joseph Diodati, Chair of the Downtown Oakville BIA.

The mandate of the Downtown Oakville BIA is to promote and enhance the downtown area and make improvements to municipally owned properties. With that mandate comes over $900,000.00 in investment from the BIA members which goes into the promotion and enhancement of the downtown area. Approximately $750,000 is through the BIA Levy – an additional tax above the commercial tax levy and the rest comes from corporate sponsorship, donations, revenue generation and grants.

“This little gem called downtown Oakville is dynamic, its’ cultured and most importantly progressive” Says Marcia Small, Downtown Oakville Board member and business owner who was instrumental in this exemption. ”All of the success factors for our downtown area make shopping, dining, and gallery & museum hopping a real treat and the new designation is another great reason to visit Oakville’s downtown core!”

I had the pleasure of meeting Debbie Lachapelle, the owner/operator of Bite Me Twice, a delightful café-style restaurant located at 107 Dunn Street, just steps from Lakeshore Road East, in beautiful Downtown Oakville. This friendly and comfortable eatery serves delicious fresh food for breakfast and lunch, six days every week, all prepared from scratch.

The menu is varied and includes an extensive selection of soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps and so much more! Respect for traditional cooking methods and preparation ensure the quality of all meals. “Bite Me Twice’s” kitchen does not have a microwave!

Debbie’s customers return again and again to enjoy her tasty, generous portions, very reasonable prices and the service is friendly and prompt. This is the winning combination!

Some of the fireworks in Bronte Harbour from last year’s Canada Day celebration.

Oakville residents are encouraged to come out and celebrate Canada day at Bronte Village with events running all throughout the day – ending with a dazzling fireworks display.

“It’s an event to attract people from the community to come and partake in the celebration of Canada,” said Murray McDonald, Chair of the Bronte BIA.

“The event has expanded over the years, doubled, tripled in size. When I started five years ago it was a hand full of people and a couple of bands. Five years later we now have 11 acts on two stages, and together over 50 vendors with food and merchandise.”

The day starts with the traditional Lions Club pancake breakfast and continues throughout the day with vendors, bands, face painting, and plenty more for the kids.

On the two stages bands set to appear are Groove Marmalade, Ride the Tiger, and Ronnie and The Jets. Starting just before noon, there is a kid’s music performance and comedy show, with bands playing for the rest of the afternoon.

Included in the day is a BMX skate park, food, vendors, and a beer garden.

Residents are encouraged to wear red for the day to show their Canadian pride.

“The weather looks like it’s going to be tremendous,” said McDonald.

“I’d like to join together with people in the community, my neighbors, to have a really great time and celebrate Canada and Oakville for what it is. We will all have a sense of community by coming out and enjoying it together.”

The entire day ends with fireworks starting 10:15 p.m.

Alan Johnston, an Oakville town councilor insists that the fireworks have been getting better every year. He has been attending for over 20 years now – taking his children, and grandchildren out to Bronte Park for the festivities.

“Lately the town has been getting more involved and its more a celebration of Canada, not just fireworks,” Johnston said. “It’s important to show your pride in the country.”

This event is one Oakville tradition residents should not miss out on a full day of fun.
