Unfortunately at the expense of the poor people of Middletown Connecticut, I think the interest in our issue with stopping a 900MW gas fired power plant exploded across the Oakville border on Sunday, just like the explosion at the Middletown Gas fired power plant. People within a 25KM radius of Middletown have been impacted with what many are describing as similar to a “sonic boom” We believe the gas fired plant in Middletown is approximately 1/3 smaller than the plant proposed for Oakville. Our information also shows that the Middletown plant does not have a residential neighbourhood at it’s doorstep, unlike the one planned for Oakville. The Middletown plant is sited across the river and about 1Km away from the nearest home and 3 km from the nearest town. And yet, 5 people are dead and many more are seriously injured. The search and rescue mission that is continuing is hampered by not knowing how many were in the actual plant at the time of the explosion and how many to look for under the debris.
As of today, media interest in our fight will increase substantially.
Dalton McGuinty doesn’t seem to care very much about the health and environmental issues that are of great concern to us.
However, as of today he can no longer hide from the safety and security issues that have been exposed quite tragically in Middletown.
Today, it also becomes much more reasonable to ask what kind of Good Corporate Citizen could be party to the development of a gas fired power plant smack in the middle of a densely populated Ontario neighbourhood when that risk can be so easily avoided by not selling the land the plant is to be situated on. For that matter, what kind of Company would put their own head office and manufacturing facility in the line of fire (literally) after the events of today?
Ford more than ever, has to be held accountable for their part in the proposal for
the Oakville Generating Station.
As of today, the TransCanada public meeting scheduled for this coming Wednesday night has a lot more meaning.
Please plan to attend. Your safety is at risk and TransCanada needs to hear your concerns in person.
Details are as follows:
Where: TransCanada Public Meeting @ the Oakville Conference Centre at Wyecroft/Bronte Road
When: Wed Feb 10, 2010 4:00-9:30pm (Please plan to attend for 7:00pm for maximum effect)
Today is a very good day to write a letter to the media or the Government or to Ford about your concerns.
Today is also a very good day to keep the people of Middletown in your thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Brenda Phelan
