Selling the family home can be a daunting experience for many Seniors. Many wish to remain at “home” as long as possible. Others who are healthy are often anxious to sell in order to spend months in warmer climes following their passions such a travelling or playing golf.
Whatever the wishes of Seniors, they are complex because they usually involve a complete life-style change. Some are recognizing the possibility of ill-health in the future and the time is fast approaching when they won’t be able to easily navigate those stairways – and they know that a wheel chair could be a part of their future. They may have a fear of living too far from their doctors and a medical facility.
It is important to listen well and, for this group of Seniors, to choose their Real Estate Representative carefully. Knowledge and expertise are important skills required to counsel clients age 50+ through these major financial and lifestyle transitions that involve relocating, refinancing, or selling the family home.
A true and recent story: My uncle who lived near Ottawa was a man who loved his family dearly. He had happily lived in his family home for his life-time but eventually required nursing home care. His family could not take over the home he loved, so it was put on the market and eventually sold. The day the new family moved into his home, this man was taken to the hospital and he passed five days later. His home was no longer his, and his family was grown and successful. He wanted to go “Home”.
Most stories do not end like this one. Most have very happy endings! An accolade from a happy client in transition that is posted on my web-site:
If you want your home SOLD and know that every detail has been looked after, call Janet – you won’t be sorry! My dream of living in downtown Oakville came true with lots of giggles and green tea. – Nancy
The first story is only one scenario but outlines the importance of, and the careful attention to needs required when dealing with this segment of our population and their families. Could a great agent have changed this scenario? Likely not. A great agent, however, who understands the impact of these life-style changes does greatly aid to the smoothness of each transaction and can provide the support to create “healthy change” in these transitional, life-changing situations.
During my 25 years as a Broker in the Real Estate industry, helping people to make these necessary life-style changes with ease and joy has always been my goal. I work with people – dear people. I help buy and sell homes with caring, professional service. “Helping You is What I Do”!

Recent studies showed that seniors prefer to live at home and maintain their lifestyle. It is argues that most often staying at home has a positive impact on the person, his family and quality of life. In some cases, in order to achieve that seniors should consider applying for CCAC services or even private home care services that can provide personal support workers (PSW) for personal care and companionship.
