The Canadian Club of Halton Peel hosted dinner speaker, Dr. Rick Adachi, MD, an authority on Osteoporosis. This was a relevant and timely topic as November is Osteoporosis Month in Canada and, as our population is living longer and wanting to enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle, it is the focus of many people.
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue that leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture, particularly of the hip, spine, wrist and shoulder. According to Dr. Adachi, Osteoporosis leads to the majority of fractures that occur past the age of 50 and you can break bones in your spine without realizing it. About 80% of people with Osteoporosis are not being diagnosed or treated for the disease.
Dr. Adachi is a graduate of McMaster University with a fellowship in Internal Medicine and in Rheumatology. He is a member of the Council of Scientific Advisors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and a past president and member of the Scientific Advisory Council of Osteoporosis Canada.

He has conducted numerous clinical trials and published extensively on a wide variety of therapies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Once thought to be a normal part of aging, osteoporosis is now recognized as a treatable disease that affects 25% of women and close to 20% of men. Dr Adachi’s talk at the Canadian Club focused on “Men and Osteoporosis … So You Think it Cannot Happen to You.”
Dr Adachi explained that a “fragility fracture is one that results from a force equivalent to a fall from a standing height or less. It is a strong predicator for future fractures as it reflects decreased bone strength.”
He says that Osteoporosis and fractures are common in men but that most men are not aware of it, nor are they treated. Dr. Adachi’s presentation focused on the importance of fractures in identifying individuals who would benefit from treatment, the latest research on osteoporosis in men, and therapies for the treatment of the disease in men and women.
In addition to the therapies prescribed by our doctors, Dr Adachi spent time assuring the audience that there were precautions that they can put into place as preventative measures. Vitamin D and dietary calcium were top of his list. He says that most of the year in Canada it is impossible to get enough sunshine to fulfill the vitamin D requirements and that a supplement of 2,000 units per day is recommended to support healthy bones. Calcium is best when taken into the body through food – think milk, cheese, yoghurt, etc. However, supplements may be necessary for some individuals to reach the daily recommendation of 1,500 mg per day but excess consumption may lead to kidney stones. Weight bearing exercises at least 4 times each week will also help to prevent fractures. Stay healthy! Prevent fractures and osteoporosis.
