John Oliver Explains the Oakville Hospital Local Share Plan

February 4th, 2010 by Comment button 3 Comments »

Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital has been providing primary health services to Oakville for more than 60 years. Over the past six decades OTMH has undergone numerous expansions and renovations to keep up with our growing community, but our hospital can no longer accommodate the healthcare needs of a growing and aging community.

Oakville has been given the rare opportunity of building a new hospital from the ground up. In planning for this once-in-a-lifetime project, we have drawn upon the experience of our patients, their families, community members, physicians, volunteers, our staff and our donors. Designed with their valuable input, the New Oakville Hospital will be a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the needs of our community today and into the future.

We will be offering enhanced services including three CT Scanners and two MRI machines and additional inpatient capacity. New services at the hospital will include a cancer clinic to provide patient assessment, counselling, chemotherapy administration and radiation assessments for oncology patients. This will be an invaluable benefit for those patients and their families who currently must leave Oakville for this service.

Planning for this new hospital began many years ago and already we have seen a significant investment made by the provincial government in this project. They have committed to financing 100% of the planning costs as well as 90% of the building and 90% of the building maintenance for 30 years. Now we must provide evidence that we can pay for our share of this project – otherwise known as our local share. We have identified sources for $330 million of the estimated $530 million local share – what remains is the $200 million that we have asked the Town to support. The Town’s contribution will help to ensure our new hospital has the equipment and space for future expansion that our community needs and deserves.

Hospitals are a critical piece of infrastructure and should be considered a priority for a community. The New Oakville Hospital will serve all residents of Oakville and is integral to the continued health and well-being of our community. We need your support for this municipal request to ensure that the health care services our families require today, tomorrow or 30 years from now will be available in Oakville.

For the health of our community, please support the New Oakville Hospital local share plan.
