Oakville.com: Please tell us about your background.
MPP Flynn: Well, I was first elected to the Ontario legislature in October 2003. Prior to that, I served as an Oakville Town Regional Councilor for over 18 years. My wife Janice and I have lived in Oakville for more than 30 years and have one son, Nigel.
Oakville.com: Can you describe the duties and responsibilities of your Office?
MPP Flynn: As MPP, I was elected to represent the constituents of Oakville. My community office is a place where Oakville residents can come to obtain information on provincial services and programs. The office is also a point where the community can share their concerns and receive assistance for issues they are having with a provincial department or service.
I was recently appointed Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities where I will be working with Minister John Milloy to strengthen our colleges and universities. We are working to ensure that more students receive a post-secondary education, that more students have access to student aid and that more apprentices are able to find placements. During this difficult economic time, we are also working to support workers who want to learn new skills for new careers.
Oakville.com: Please tell us about some of the community events that you are involved with.
MPP Flynn: Each year, my community office hosts a free bbq to give Oakville residents the opportunity to come out and visit our office. I also attempt to visit every grade 5 class to talk about my job and I run a Canada Day flag challenge where the business improvement areas compete to display the most flags.
In the past year, we have also held a reception honouring Oakville’s athletes, held a Town Hall with the Ontario Bar Association to discuss challenges in the legal field and I co-hosted a poverty consultation in partnership with other community agencies.
We are looking forward to organizing a few additional events in the coming months.
Oakville.com: What issues are you presently working on that affect the residents of Oakville?
MPP Flynn: There are a number of issues that I assist constituents on ranging from a health concern to a driver’s license inquiry. Recently, a lot of my focus has been on the current economic climate, specifically issues relating to taxes, jobs and infrastructure and on working with Mayor Rob Burton, Council and community groups to oppose the proposed power plant in the Clarkson Airshed.
Oakville.com: Thank you for your time MPP Flynn.
