As many of you know, the month of June is designated as Seniors Month, and as such, Halton Region was proud to host Celebrating Seniors 2010.

If you are a senior in Halton, Seniors Month is a time to celebrate and to be thankful for the contributions you make to your family, your friends and our community.

In honour of Seniors Month, Halton Region’s Elder Services Advisory Committee planned the Celebrating Seniors 2010 event, which was both educational and entertaining.

Various displays were set up around the room, which included information and resources about everything from healthy foods, exercise, and volunteering to technology, governmental services for seniors, and seniors centre programs.

Dick O’Brien shared some stories and wisdom in his keynote speech entitled “Laughter is the Spiritual Glue of Sanity”.

Guests were also entertained in the morning with a Kung Fu demonstration by Jack Wang, and musical performances by Shuran Wang and the Korean traditional percussion group Yesung Samulnori.(Yee-sung Samul-nori)

I would like to thank the Halton Multicultural Council for arranging the performances.

In Halton as our seniors population grows in numbers it also grows in diversity.

Diversity in the community makes us stronger.

There is a lot we can learn from each other.

At Halton Region we are committed to providing services and supports that are inclusive to all people living in Halton.

We are also committed to providing welcoming environments at our facilities.

Celebrating Seniors 2010 concluded with a foot stomping performance by Tom Leadbeater.

Tom performed at last year’s event and he was a huge hit.

I would like offer my sincere thanks to each and every senior in attendance for the contributions they have made to make Halton such a great place to live, work, raise a family and retire.

Thank you to the Elder Services Advisory Committee and the seniors’ centres from Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville for working together to plan and host the event.

I wish all of Halton’s seniors the best as you celebrate Seniors Month.
