The Oakville Chamber of Commerce hosted their 59th Annual Chair’s Dinner with keynote speaker the Hon. Lisa Raitt, Federal Minister of Transport and Halton M.P. “We are honoured to host Ms. Raitt,” says chamber Past Chair Julia Hanna. “The chamber is thrilled to provide this rare opportunity to our members. Given the importance of transportation to our town and region, Minister Raitt’s speech is very timely.”
In addition to recognizing Julia Hanna’s leadership, the gala event was the inauguration of the chamber’s Incoming Chair Orla Johnston. “Under the leadership of Julia Hanna, it has been record year for the chamber. Julia has been instrumental in increasing the chamber’s profile in the business community and the community at large,” comments chamber President John Sawyer. “The Chair’s Dinner and Minister Raitt’s visit are a fitting tribute to Julia for the outstanding leadership she has provided to the chamber.”
Orla Johnston says that “The board will be developing a new three-year strategic plan over the next few months to ensure we maintain the chamber’s momentum in our key areas: membership development and growth, advocacy work on behalf of our members and hosting relevant, engaging events.” The chamber has 178 going on the chamber’s first trip to China in October. Past Chair Wendy Rinella is hosting a show on TVCogeco entitled In Good Company featuring behind-the-scene looks at member companies and interviews with their CEOs and owners. Above all, the chamber received the distinction of being in the top seven percent of Canadian chambers, accredited by the Chamber Accreditation Council of Canada.
The Oakville Chamber is the voice of the Oakville business community. The chamber provides member benefits including: advocacy, corporate benefits, networking opportunities, business development and educational forums. The chamber’s mission is to foster a healthy, engaged and sustainable business environment and economy in Oakville. Federal Minister of Transport and Halton M.P., Lisa Raitt was first elected to the House of Commons in 2008 and was appointed Minister of Transport in July of 2013. During her address to the chamber, Minister Raitt shared that the next few years of her life would be committed to safety, ensuring that citizens would come home to their families at the end of the night safe and healthy. She recounted her visit to Lac Megantic in Quebec at length saying that her wish will be a “safe, reliable, efficient transportation system”. Stating that “Canada has one of the best transportation records in the world”, the Minister’s goal is to maintain the high standard of safety to which Canadians are accustomed.
The 59th Annual Chair’s Dinner is a time to reflect on the past year’s successes and to honour the chamber’s board, partners and members who have invaluable contributions to the chamber.
Incoming Chair Orla Johnston closed her remarks with the statement: “Logic will take you from A to B, however, imagination will take you everywhere!” It is through the collective efforts and support of the chamber’s board of directors, partners and members that the chamber is able come together at the Annual Chair’s Dinner and celebrate the past year’s successes and look forward to the coming year.
