Get in Shape this Spring

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Want to change up your workouts?  A spin class might just be the answer for you.

Indoor spinning is a great way to get your cardiovascular and strength training done in a quick 45 minute session.

10 Benefits of Spinning:

1.  Burn a ton of Calories- the average class can burn 800-1000 calories.  Need I say more?

2.  Low to No Impact- If you have knee and hip issues spin is a great way to keep up with your fitness program while removing the majority of impact on the body.

3.  Get Lost in the Music- one of my favorite things about spin is the music.  When you get an awesome instructor who plays motivating music it really helps the workout to go by fast.  Nothing worse than a 45 minute class feeling like a 90 minute class. Music is key!

4.  Feel The Energy- When you participate in a spin class with other riders the energy can be overwhelming, in a good way.  You can feed off of each other and that can push you to a whole new level in your fitness.

5.  Toned Legs- Spin is another fantastic way to sculpt and tone those gorgeous gams you always wanted.

6.  You Have the Control- People always tell me spin is too hard.  Well, it can be if you put too much tension on your bike but remember you have control over your resistance.  Spin gives you the ability to progress at your own pace.

7.  Detox- One of the best ways to detox is to SWEAT! Trust me when I say you will be sweating buckets when you spin.

8.  Stress Reliever- Spin is a super way to get rid of the cob webs in the brain.  It will clear your mind and leave you feeling energetic and alert.

9.  Mental Strength- Spin is a brilliant way to connect the mind, body, and soul.  A lot of times you may feel you want to give up but as your body gets stronger you will find so does your mind, and when the mind gets stronger, the body gets even stronger. Its win, win!

10. Happy Juice- All exercise helps to increase Serotonin in the body or what I like to call “happy juice”.  The music, the energy, the instructor, and the sound of the fly wheel on the bike are all spinerrific ways to tap into that juice and feel good all day.

Harbour House, TripAdvisor’s ‘Most Romantic Hotel in Canada’

Despite our busy schedules managing work, the kids and life in general, my husband and I managed to make some time, just for us.  We decided on Niagara-on-the-Lake for the perfect mini getaway. After researching the many hotel and B & B offerings in what is often called “the prettiest town in Canada”, the choice was obvious. Harbour House was the clear front-runner. In fact, it’s rated the # 1 hotel in Ontario on TripAdvisor, who also just named it the ‘Most Romantic Hotel in Canada’. Perfect, that’s just what we need – romance. We booked a package that included dinner at a sister property, The Charles Inn (which coincidentally also topped the TripAdvisor list of Romantic Hotels in Canada at # 5). (more…)

Married for 66 yeasr, Catherine & Lyn on their wedding day

“Love that Lasts Forever” is the promise of Valentine’s Day! While many of us can only long for that bliss, Catherine and Lyn Martin, married now for 66 years and both in their nineties, live in their own home, laugh, cry and love together in a union “made in heaven”. They have made their good luck throughout the years. With a chuckle, in the words of Lyn Martin, “It’s been wonderful; like two lovers; it has always been that way”!  Valentine’s Day has always been a special time for this couple of “Lovers”. Both of their birthdays are in February, days before Valentine’s Day and just a few days apart; Lyn is four days older and will always remind Catherine about that! (more…)

Giftless Birthday Parties For Kids

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Has your child been invited to a giftless birthday party?  Have you held a giftless party for your kids? Recently the momstown Oakville message board was joining in on the conversation about this new trend.  A member was thinking of going this route for her child’s upcoming birthday and was wondering how people felt about it.

For those who haven’t heard about a giftless birthday party, the idea is that invited guests are asked to make a charitable donation instead of bringing a gift.  A popular tool to use is Echoage.com where you can make a donation and half of the money goes to a charity of choice and the other half goes towards buying one larger gift for the birthday boy or girl.  If not using that tool, you can simply direct people to a charitable organization’s website.  Another option is to do a giftless birthday where you don’t ask for donations either but just let guests know that gifts are not necessary. Canadian Club of Halton-Peel Hosts Top Health Journalist

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Speaker Andre Picard (middle) with Jim, Charlotte, Barry & Angie

The Canadian Club of Halton-Peel hosted Globe and Mail Public Health Reporter André Picard, one of Canada’s top health and public policy journalists, who talked about our health care system and the changes required to customize and streamline the system to meet today’s changing requirements.

André Picard provided the Canadian Club guests informed commentary on the Canadian policy-making process. He stated that, “Health care in Canada is running a deficit in more ways than just the fiscal side. The deficit in performance comes from a 1960′s model of system management, ill-defined goals, and an ideological, values-driven debate dominated by vested interests, rather than a dialogue – that includes patients – about the best ways to provide health services.” (more…)
