I sprung out of bed today, full of energy and anticipation, knowing that I was on a fishing adventure aboard “Bear Necessity” with two of the best fishermen in Ontario, Guy Smith and his delightful fishing-mate Gary Kruyff. I was not disappointed!

The sunrise over Lake Ontario was beautiful. The boat was extremely comfortable and the rods were soon set for the “catch-of-the-day”! It was not long before I heard the words, “fish on” and a fabulous 20 pound, trophy sized Chinook Salmon was being reeled in by Bill, one of Guy’s Cameron’s Brewing Company guests, through the water towards us. This beautiful fish headed for the boat and the extended net. An enticing morning trophy!

Members of the Bronte BIA and Morning Show host, Sangita from CityTV, were at the dock to meet us as we came home with this beautiful fish and the trip was complete. The TV cameras rolled on as everyone was having fun laughing, grimacing and holding the trophy fish. Another quality experience on the water.
A trophy Chinook Salmon fishery has been created by the MNR in the western basin of Lake Ontario. Most people have no idea that it exists! Lake Ontario has a plentiful supply of Chinook and Coho Salmon as well as Steelhead or Rainbow Trout. These fish are exciting to catch – and delightful to eat!

He knows that the best fish are found in the perfect water temperature for the type of fish you are seeking, that the lures must travel at a specific speed down at the bait and what speed the boat has to travel to achieve this. He knows that the fish relate to structure, and he has his special secrets – his “Secret Weapon” – the baits he uses. Guaranteed to catch fish most days!
Guy, a distinguished military veteran, hosted the Inaugural Veterans Fishing Derby held in Bronte Harbour on Canada Day. He is a sponsor of the 2011 Bronte Harbour Days and offered his yacht “Veterans Dream” to the Bronte Harbour Sandcastle artists, providing them a relaxing evening and cruise from Bronte Harbour. An Oakville for them to remember – a highlight of their stay!
