Spring is finally here! Now is the time to start getting things around your home cleaned up and ready for the new season. Listed below are a few ways to do just that:
1. Start at the Top
Begin by cleaning cobwebs and dust from the corners, ceiling and ceiling fan of each room. While the ladder is out, pull any removable glass light fixtures down and wash them by running them through the dishwasher.
2. Go Around the Walls
Look around for any scratch or scuff marks on the walls and touch them up with matching paint. Vacuum around the baseboards. Use the vacuum attachment to go over all upholstery. Dust all shelves and knick-knacks and clean picture frames, pictures and mirrors with glass cleaner.
3. Enjoy the View
Pull down all blinds and curtains. Wash blinds in the bathtub and lay them on a towel to dry. Clean windows and ledges and run the curtains through the dryer on the low-cool setting to remove any dust. If needed, use a cool iron to press any wrinkles out before re-hanging them.
4. Next Stop…the Kitchen
Clean out the refrigerator, throwing away all food items that have past the expiration date. Scrub away food residue from the oven and microwave. Wipe down and organize all cabinets and drawers.
6. Beds and Closets
Flip or rotate all mattresses and wash all pillows to clean and to cut down on dust mites and allergens. Clean out closets. Donate any old clothes, shoes, or any other items that are no longer needed.
7. Showers and Drains
Change out or clean all shower curtains. Scrub away mildew and mold that has build up on the tiles or sides of the shower or tub. Pour a half-cup of baking soda and one cup of vinegar into all drains and then run hot water afterward for about ten minutes. This should clean the drains and clear out any buildup.
8. Clean Up Your Act
Dust can get clogged in the ducts and vent of your dryer and become a fire hazard. Thoroughly clean the lint trap and pull both the dryer and washer from the wall and use your vacuum’s attachment to clean in and around the openings of both appliances.
9. Keep Your Cool
To keep your air conditioner running smoothly throughout the spring and summer months, change out your air filter and consider having someone to clean out all dust and debris from the ductwork.
10. Take Care of Yourself (and Your Family)
Now is a great time to change out the batteries in all of your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
With a little hard work, your home should soon be looking (and smelling) great. Then all you will have left to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the wonderful spring season.
